The Eiffel Tower was built in Paris from 1887 to
1889 by Gustave Eiffel, a French engineer specializing in revolutionary
steel constructions.
Gustave Eiffel beat 300 other contestants for the building prize and
although not all French people liked the Eiffel Tower from the start, it was
kept to place telegraphic antennas on the top.
The structure took more than two years to complete. Each one of the about
12,000 iron pieces were designed separately to give them exactly the shape
needed. All pieces were prefabricated and fit together using approx. 7 million
nails.
